Common Fires – Samstag

Couldn’t hear anything other than December and Sufjan and all things nice so how would it feel in mid-April I thought to myself. Pretty good it seems for ‘Samstag’ reaches the part of our psyche that has us thinking back on childhood memories and all the warmth that such things inspire. Common Fires (Caleb McAlpine) have the craft to get as whimsical as can be but they’re also adept at the melodies to sell those daydreams, no surprise then that ‘Samstag’ was written at a time when childhood wonder was still possible and recorded 10 years later when the realisation began to dawn. Beautiful few minutes, tear inducing in fact such is its sweet way. Reminded me of Loney, Dear and especially ‘Carrying A Stone’. KH
