This is Brandon Hoogenboom’s debut solo release but so fully formed is it that you’d not be surprised to hear that he had a full career previously with his band Set Sail. Yep, it’s rare that an act can unleash layered opuses of the grandiose pop variety like this from the getgo. ‘Feelin’ has a retro glow for sure but it never feels stilted by nostalgia and on more than one occasion it screamed Brendan Benson circa ‘Lapalco’ to me (or Sean O’Hagan always). Summer is still far away but close your eyes and this track will capture its warm majesty. KH
