No getting away from this classic sound, I tried but it kept reeling me in. Neil Diamond springs to mind owing to the deep timbre and maturity in the vocals, and the way that grown-up approach is thrown aside for jauntier expression and carefree abandonment at the opportune moment. The sweet spot is the grandiose chorus of course, which takes ‘Just a Boy’ to the next level and into whistling postman mode. This is music done right, a throwback to a different time from an artist who appears to have many strings to this bow. KH
