Chris Cohen had existed up to 2012 in the fringes but his solo record on Captured Tracks that year proved that while he was an able foil in bands such as Deerhoof, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti and Danielson his talent deserved a term in the spotlight. It was a raising of the Curtains per se that saw him make the jump and ‘Overgrown Path’ displayed enough winning idiosyncrasies to prove that Cohen should have been playing the obvious card long before it eventually came up trumps. ‘Caller No. 99’ is out of time and in keeping with ‘Overgrown Path’s date with another time. There’s nothing linear to the song’s structure but each of its slowly unfurling parts is a soft reminder of an eclectic genius at work. Cohen’s voice alone is a fluffy cloud full of nothing but warm comfort. Long may it reign. KD
