Away from the spotlight created by the chart success of ‘Wake Up Boo!’ lay one of the best bands of the 1990’s. Their genuine classic ‘Giant Steps’ already had 2 years on the clock previous before they had a huge hit on their hands in the summer of 1995. The album is was taken from, ‘Wake Up!’, was never going to be in the same league but it still had some great pop moments. Gone was the untamed spirit of adventure and in stepped pop’s mercurial head. Thankfully they didn’t play it all completely straight as evidenced by the album’s standout ‘Martin, Doom! It’s Seven O’clock’. Sice Rowbottom was his angelic self on lead vocals while Martin Carr pulled an elaborate set of strings, through several disparate movements. So much bliss in just over 6 minutes. KD

Giant Steps was an awesome album, all 4 sides of it. Their subsequent single, From The Bench At Belvidere, had a pop up of the bench outside the newsagents my grandparents had run for a while.
That single had some great b-sides too Rich as did many of their EP releases around that time.
Giant steps was a gem alright! I love this remix of lazarus.
