You know for a long time this was the way music used to be. Straight-ahead, not particularly clever in the lyric department, with giant chords and a vocalist who threatened to shred his vocal chords because he wanted to give it everything. The kind of smouldering intensity that followed in the wake of all those endless movements in the first half of the 1990’s. It could be post-grunge, skewed shoegaze or just plain old punk rock (with some Killers, first album, thrown in for good measure). No matter because it is just great to hear a band with a fire in their belly, letting youthful exuberance work its magic with a giant feck-off for the consequences. Eagulls are from Leeds and they sound huge because that’s what they are going to be. KD
