Don’t worry, it’s not all like the voices in your addled head opening sequences. And to be truthful that is my impression of the Fiery Furnaces, a pair of souls (siblings Eleanor and Matt Friedberger) who specialise in tinkered to within an inch of their life sonic matters. On ‘1917’ (from their 2004 LP ‘Blueberry Boat’) the complex clouds do part however and out pops a gorgeous piece of melancholy pop. It’s about baseball but don’t let that put you off. If it was ever thus they’d probably be kicking a rather large moneyball now but instead they’ve stuck to their guns and continue to attract admiring if puzzled glances. KD
