She & Him – Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?

Don’t let the fact that she’s a famous actress put you off because Zooey Deschanel is well able to belt them out (she is married to Ben Gibbard of Death Cab so she knows how the R&R game works). In a countrified way if I may add, which in some ways gives her the edge over her contemporaries by the fact that she sounds different (Tamar Kamin is close though). On the other side is Matt Ward (M. Ward), he is the one that tinkers with the music in the background, taking what Deschanel has written and turning it into a She & Him composition. The music that comes out the other end has a theatrical and retro feel which means instant likeability, not exactly mainstream but not likely to be rejected by it either. ‘Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?’ comes from the pair’s first LP ‘Volume One’ which was followed up by ‘Volume Two’ last year. She & Him are a delightful proposition so let’s hope there is much more to come from them. KD
