The Muggabears will take a bit of time to work their magic. There is more than a passing resemblance to Sonic Youth but it fails to detract from a pretty unique experience. ‘The Goth Tarts’ is abrasive and makes for an uneasy few minutes but it is nonetheless a compelling listen. The Brooklyn based trio appear to have few weak spots, Travis Johnson is perfectly lippy and twangsome, Keith Murphy beats a path to the door of a long lost drummer called Grohl and Emily Ambruso dishes up plenty of curvy bass lines. The Muggabears have just released an extended EP called ‘Night Choreography’ (their second) and its rolling landscapes could just about put your faith back in indie rock. Flying against convention could yet become 2007’s musical legacy. KD
