And breathe, that was the first sensation to hit me on ‘Empty Cup’ – not least because Jonathan has combined the most basic of folk constructs in his own fashion and it genuinely comes across like a crooner from way back when things arrived on vinyl and the hiss and crackle just added to the authenticity. Of course ‘Empty Cup’ has been produced beautifully but it retains a crisp live feel which means it could easily transfer to venues like chapels and town halls to give it the requisite echo effects. Feels like perfect company at the end of the year, just the right warmth but stirring enough to deter us from getting too introspective and maudlin.
