‘Hot Minute’ offers us a stirring confidence that never feels like it is in our face, a vaguely country rock tone but most of all a refreshing light on how we all fall off the wagon for all sorts of things from time to time. And that is fine, especially if such minor transgressions can result in songs with such an illuminating personality as this one from Derby’s Sophie Kilburn. A classic 80’s alt rock number that bleeds into early 90’s shoegaze so we’re treated to a mosaic of styles and influences and it feels pretty vital as a result despite my natural inclination to shelve it somewhere in the drawer marked MOR. Just too much good stuff to resist here. KH
