Now that is a strong lead so even if ‘Same Way I’ is rooted in acousticism it feels like we’re getting a proper talking to from Queensland’s Calan Mai. And it seems the store of energy he drinks from is a pool of romantic thoughts. There’s a charming aspect to this track, does things simply but with a pleasing vigour so you know those feelings are drawn from a heart that works to the beat of authentic emotions. There is a tinge of experimentation going down too and it lifts ‘Same Way I’ beyond the pale, pop/rock on a mission to re-energise the rulebook on the hoary love song template. KH
