It is the subtlety that got me, a drifting degree of longing but also romance because anyone who displays this degree of melancholy has felt the full force of what it means to be in love. ‘Carry On’ is intimate, undoubtedly making a play on the old folk/country/americana sound of yore but it feels ever so alive and full of characters who are capable of gliding through all those upheavals that life throws up. Some may well be unsuspecting but this track that has been set up to woo us and it would take a hard heart to resist all this sweet talking. At one point it felt like Christmas, a gift from Donegal, so that was enough to sell me the Charles James & the Rise dream. KH
