The Ricos – Local Tourist

Such a low-slung guitar tug but there is gravity to what the Ricos produce here and it initially hinted at My Bloody Valentine before giving us reasons to remember the Jesus & Mary Chain. And that comes from the way the vocals periodically join forces with the dreamy alt 90s playing that is decidedly post-slacker. That means that ‘Local Tourist’ won’t be bursting down the door but by god there is a serious undertow to its form, the instrumental break illustrating what it is all about and it had us closing our eyes and dreaming of those days when music could transport us. Doesn’t happen often but I felt genuinely compelled to press the repeat button after fade out, the purity of the Ricos sound such that it required another immersion in their near transcendent mix of vocal humming and the levity of a psychedelic swell of guitar dreaminess. Had me thinking of January from Alan McGee’s Poptones label and specifically their ‘Contact Light’. KH
