Strange Pilgrim – Staring at The Sky (alternate version)
I must admit to hearing a good deal of Mojave 3 here, that country vibe of theirs but where Strange Pilgrim (Portland’s Josh Barnhart and friends) depart is in a psychedelic bent that brings a tropical strain of summer to our winter shores. And it feels ever so reassuring as a result, in fact this is how ambience should be deployed if notions of hammock sessions with not a care in the world need to be dreamed up to offer a break from the coal face. There are glimmers of Art Garfunkel and in particular his sunshine golden ‘Breakaway’, to ensure we’re left in a good place once it has shimmered into the distance. Mercury Rev flashbacks here. KH
