With headphones on there is a whole lot going on with ‘Thinking of Black’, stripping back you find bonus layers but you don’t need to extend yourselves all that much because there is a superficial joy to what Humdrum Book Club have conspired to dream up. There is a thread of psychedelic tendering but what drives the piece is the pop qualities of a singer (Andrew Ross) who knows how to deliver a lorry load of melodies. Makes for a behemoth of sound, like there is a vastness to the production that could fill large room not to mind small heads. So much to gorge on which will mean there will be pleasant surprises on the return visits too. KH
