What I really like about what Brooklyn’s Melissa Mary Ahern has done here is to keep a sense of decorum while at the same time boasting a streak of wildness. So among other things ‘One Way Life’ bubbles with intention. The percussion pulses with rhythm and that vocal performance is forever on the edge of cutting loose from those self imposed reins. The effect of the words is that it gives the track a certain frisson that moves the piece beyond usual boundaries. You can clap along if you like but the intention appears to be to abandon restraint in whatever manner you see fit. KH
