The Confusions – People Are Strange

I had an extended moment for the Doors back when that Val Kilmer movie came out so ‘People Are Strange’ is a tune that is most familiar (even more so because it was central to ‘The Lost Boys’). But my god the song never came close to sounding like this so I am enthralled by the innovation that Sweden’s the Confusions have poured into the piece. I mean that was a creepy tune and here it is in lounge bar format, a twinkling wonder and all sorts of dream pop asides (courtesy of singer Zarah Andersson-Knut in the main) so every second of the way feels like we are tip-toeing about in material new despite this being a cover. Talk about throwing things up in the air and coming back with an entity that exists on its own, and probably destined to be played on planets alien to our own. New year hours need an appropriate soundtracj and this year it has come from the most unexpected of sources. The Confusions are a Sundsvall band who have been with us over 30 years at this stage and have just released their magical ‘Songs for Movies’ LP. KH
