A slow kind of acoustic grunge effect and so ‘Grow Up’ had us attuned to its mischievous approach. There is a deep down and slightly dirty nature to Jack Manley’s aching and it marks his track out for its sheer sense of personality rather than relying on production zeal to stir listeners into something that might be called love and affection. Comes across a bit like the White Stripes (with ‘Just’ from Radiohead in there too) to me, raw and unfiltered but crucially authentic and in 2024 that sure is something to prize. He is articulating and might be falling apart at the seams at the same time but there is a force of nature pulling the strings and gets me fired up every time. KH
