Hard Chiller – Close By

There is just no quarter given to delicate types, Santa Rosa’s Hard Chiller you see deploy the giant riffs from the getgo and don’t hold back through the entirety of ‘Close By’. First impressions were of Mew and their classic LP ‘And The Glass Handed Kites’ for there is a prog-rock dimension with the falsetto led vocals adding the sugar on top. Now and then a blast of sheer noise makes for a very fine medicine and I felt it here, not least because there is a concern for those of us on the lookout for something tunesome with the rampaging. You could trace ‘Close By’ all the way back to Smashing Pumpkins ‘Siamese Dream’, big sound, strong characters and a reliance on strong writing to get most over the bombastic sequences. KH
