Mantaray – Her Eyes

Not often you see Mew getting name-checked so Finland’s Mantaray had a leg up in our affections even before ‘Her Eyes’ started to flutter. A dreamy kind of effect is produced too, a kind of lost child in a world that constantly takes it toll so most of us tuning in will be able to identify. Where things really fly though is at the chorus as that combination of soaring vocal from Jaakko Mäkeläinen and shimmering chords tell us that there is meaning, even if we haven’t fully broken the code just yet. ‘Her Eyes’ struck me as more in tune with A-ha, emotional pop that elevates all within earshot to a much loftier perch.
