Weekends – Royal Gum

I am not surprised that Weekends had another life, a decade ago, because ‘Royal Gum’ has the heat and vigour of a noughties act so initially it was to Australia’s Gerling that I turned but you could parallel a whole host of indie-rock gunslingers. It feels refreshing to hear an act just kick out the jams and have what sounds like the best time while they are at it. ‘Royal Gum’ really extends itself, from the dirty growls to the deep instrumental caverns of noise it leaves nothing behind and comes across like a live recording such is the crash, bang and wallop of the effects. I for one am glad this Baltimore band (Adam Lempel and Brendan Sullivan) have returned and get back to that unfinished business. KH
