Acoustic folk stirrings of the kind that would put us in in mind of Nick Drake, the tenderness is there and the empathy too so Elliott Smith also hoves into view. The rolling harmonies from Fellow Hollow and the immediate sunshine smile can’t hide a sense that behind all that sweetness is a depth of melancholy. But that is the way of things, in order to ride through the good times we have to first experience the rough moments. So while the grand old wooded structures all around might be beset by ‘Dutch Elm Disease’ there is a sense of wonder of their time spent looking over the rest of us imperiously and in great numbers. Andrew Williams and friends have created something that reminds me of peak Grandaddy (and indeed Midlake), a sense of the forlorn rarely sounds this good and it is sprinkled with moments of mischieveness to give this track a skip and a hop as well as the odd tear. It all bodes ever so well for this trio’s LP ‘Boughs of Teeth’, which came out earlier this month. KH
