Max García Conover – 5 to 4

It was Sufjan Stevens I immediately thought of and that’s no bad thing at all, Max’s deep country timbre not at all in keeping with that early comparison because it offers something grittier but as ever with this New York based act it is a sweet affair ultimately. And then the thought struck me could we in fact be hearing the tentative steps of Leonard Cohen’s successor here, the style of the spoken word style sure does impress upon us that kind of thought. Most important of course is that the song talks to us and in doing so ‘5 to 4’ makes us want to be a better person. KH
