Pans have delivered something definitively spiritual with this track, to the degree that it drew the ear of most of the hugger family. ‘Autumn Child’ proves itself to be a world away from manufactured pop and back to something near monastic. There is also an emotional heft here via those idiosyncratic Grizzly Bear like wallows and vocal undulations. The result is a piece of work that doesn’t bequeath all of its gifts until the third listen at least. Of course it gives on the first run too but those hidden layers ensure its gilded longevity. Miami’s Pans are undoubtedly a cerebral force to be reckoned with, employing instruments few have heard of before, like the Ondes Martenot, but that is only part of the story because the whole effect is one of wonder and yearning for lots more – sated we hope by 2021’s long player ‘A New Wilderness’.
