‘Old Friends’ is so ornate we can hear the birds tweeting in the trees and so the tone is set – namely an all-in Sufjan Stevens post-Christmas reflective mood. ‘Old Friends’ is intuitively companionship wielding, there are nine players in this Norweigan troupe mind, so it’s no surprise that we were cajoled into welcoming its embrace. As the vocals turned to coos and the tempo raised we felt it was merely syncing up with our heartbeats. And then you realise what inspired it, the death of a close friend and the magic feels even more authentic. Time to close your eyes and everything may well yet be alright. KH
