When you’ve been listening to music for as long as old creaky bones McHugger it can be difficult to get excited about lots of music sent your way. In saying that when an artist hits the sweet spot it’s just as exhilarating as the very first iteration of that vinyl crackle on ‘Waterfall’. That’s how it was for ‘Last Year’, Canadian artist Gareth Inkster’s debut single. Made the job of the follow-up a tough one though, even more so as Inkster has shifted his focus to a quieter, more introspective approach. That said there is a Ron Sexsmith svelteness that sustains the piece until the orchestral embellishment truly knocks you over. It all points to a real treat when the 7-track EP ‘Last Year’ emerges later this year. KH
