Welsh producer Kelly Lee Owens and singer Jenny Hval have created an ambient, dreamy delight on Anxi. It starts out all atmospheric with a hint of Massive Attack’s ‘Future Proof’ before Hval’s vocals bend the light in a most unexpected of ways. It’s obvious as the tune goes full on electronica, and it goes that way beautifully, that Owens time with Daniel Avery has been an influence as there are dashes of ‘Drone Logic’ though a little more tenderly deployed. This is spectral, jaw dropping music which inhabits an experimental world full of grand melodic flourishes. 2017, we have a winner (already). KH
