Shoegaze, although it hit its peak over 2 decades ago, still contrives to accord us gems. Who’d have thought that a sound that is severely narrow in its approach could find the wherewithal to still induce shivers. St. Petersburg band pinkultrablast have done very little to tinker with its base constructs (they breath Cocteau Slowdiveness or A Sunny Day in Glasgow if you are under 30) but in their debut album ‘Everything Else Matters’ they have managed to record one of this year’s most exhilarating releases. The prime slabs of genius are evenly spread over its 8 tracks with ‘Umi’ and ‘Holy Forest’ duelling with the Slowdive’s and MBV’s of this world for shoegaze dominance. It is the latter track that we’ll focus on today and while it peters out a little towards the end (the vocals disappear about 2 minutes in) there is no denying the extreme rush that it produces up to that point. So much so that it has already elevated into that small but hallowed bunch of tracks that includes ‘When The Sun Hits’, ‘Vapour Trail’, ‘Pearl’ and ‘Soon’. KD
