Not that he was ever close to irrelevant but 2014 has seen Beck Hanson’s reinvention and may yet prove to be his best year yet. He’s already bagged a winning ‘traditional’ album called ‘Morning Phase’ but it could be his ‘Song Reader’ project (launched in 2012) that could be true legacy. With only Beck’s sheet music to work from artists and chancers have been tasked with creating their own interpretation of the audioless songs. There is a mountain of entries to choose from with the best compiled on a newly released ‘Song Reader’ album. Amongst the sweet pollen of Jeff Tweedy’s ‘The Wolf Is on the Hill’ and Eleanor Friedberger ‘Old Shanghai’ lies the simple wonder of Lord Huron’s ‘Last Night You Were A Dream’ wherein Ben Schneider dispenses with the shiny shell and instead serves up the protein. It is delightful and sounds good with or without liquid. KD
