Being that it was released in 2000 I can clearly remember praying that the modem wouldn’t go down overnight as I tried to stitch the remaining tracks from ‘Suburban Light’ onto a hard drive of little more spec than a usb memory key. The whole process was never that much fun but the light at the end of that dark tunnel of broken connectivity promised a woozy delight from a London act whose profile clung vehemently to the shadows. It was in keeping with their music which seemed forever to be in a state of advanced narcolepsy. That was the joy, the frustration and ultimately the reason why they were such a unique ensemble. Fast forward to 2014 and Merge have just put together a reissue that spruces up the album and adds in a few forgotten and recovered tracks from those late nineties recording sessions. All told ‘Lacewings’ and its ilk were just the perfect way to kick-start the new century. KD
