Despite possessing a voice that goes beyond that of Matt Berninger, a sound I cannot warm to, there is something altogether mesmerising about Sean Rowe’s baritone. And that’s even before you start digging to understand the character behind the music. Rowe is a fascinating individual who among other things has spent a year in the wilderness where his survival was dependent on his foraging exploits. Right now he is in the latter stages of a campaign to raise money for his new album ‘Madman’, the details of which can be found here. The title track is as stark as it is inviting, quite slow to reveal itself with the early Nick Drake like instrumentation not near enough preparation for Rowe’s bulbous room filling voice. ‘Madman’ is affecting to the point that the lyrics take center-stage despite all manner of beautifulness, the brass is beautiful for one, surrounding it. A true great for 2014 to feel proud of. KD
