Jimi Goodwin had to make this album just to prove to himself that he didn’t need anyone else (apart from Guy Garvey of Elbow who co-wrote two of the tracks). If nothing else there goes his fear because as debut solo records go ‘Odludek’ is a peach. The brightest moment comes early and is an epic in its own right as it peaks and troughs over a beautiful 5 minutes. Early doors ‘Terracotta Warrior’ is a blaze of noise that should see off casuals but by hanging in there for a little bit you’ll hear it start to make sense as a near perfect bass line reveals itself and a brass section that for the first time starts to toe the party line. Unfettered from expectation and the need to collaborate Goodwin is again the freewheeling colossus that we’ve missed for the longest time. KD
