The omens were good, several nods from reputable sources and a single soundcloud tag that went by the name of ‘bandwagonesque’. That and the fact that several months earlier they had played a festival that wears its heart on its sleeve, Sappyfest. Yes, the ingredients for a dollop of indie pop greatness were in place and ‘Archie, Marry Me’ does not disappoint. It will likely be an essential pillar of Alvvay’s upcoming Chad VanGaalen produced debut LP. Molly Rankin’s vocals have a forlorn quality which may have been as a result of the years she put in with folk group the Rankin Family. Her mention of the Cranberries as an influence is instructive given how close she sounds to a young Dolores O’Riordan. An all round decent proposal. KD
