This is more like it from Cass McCombs, simple and textured with defined hooks to hang your hat on. For all I know he may not have been in the wilderness since 2007’s ‘Dropping The Writ’ but that’s when it started to sound a little stale. But with a new album, ‘Big Wheel and Others’, out next month and ‘Three Men Sitting On A Hollow Log’ suggesting that it’s back to simple time it could an opportune moment to revaluate. Before you get too excited (in as much as this laid-back shuffle could ever warrant) this song won’t be on the new LP as it was released on a split 7-inch with Michael Hurley this summer past. Should they ever make ‘Oh Brother Where Art Thou (Again)?’ this would be the perfect companion piece such is its innate yearning for a better life within the environs of something altogether simple.
