This is initially so reminiscent of Hilary Woods‘ River Cry project that I had to double check to make sure it wasn’t. Further inspection revealed a Canadian singer with her feet firmly placed in the London cool set, that being one populated by members of the Horrors and Toy. Several of the latter joined Zeffira on her debut solo LP of last year called ‘The Deserters’ and the title track has just been released as a single. And what an otherworldly gift it is, distant, alluring and almost off-balance on occasion. The percussion is smothering but it propels Zeffira into the realm of high watermark Kate Bush. It’s not quite raining but that’s only because the clouds are about to part and the sun will break through. Heavenly. KD
