Sufjan Stevens – Lumberjack Christmas/No One Can Save You From Christmases Past

His album for every State in the United States project may have ground to a halt but that doesn’t mean Sufjan Stevens is resting on his laurels. Or resting on his mistletoe for that matter because Stevens has followed up the gargantuan 5-CD collection from 2006 called ‘Songs for Christmas’ with a similarly bumper festive compendium, this time called ‘Silver & Gold’. A whopping 58 tracks over 5 volumes is what you get so there is no excuses for complaining about the same old Bing, Cliff and Wham perennials when there is so much to discover on this collection. I doubt I’ll even reach the end by New Year’s Eve but that’s because some songs deserve repeated plays. Right now I’m stuck at track 2 on the first volume with the wordy ‘Lumberjack Christmas/No One Can Save You From Christmases Past’ shaping up like a keeper. We should be thankful that an artist as gifted and prolific as Sufjan has taken it upon himself to give us an alternative soundtrack for December. KD
