Cerys Matthews is a likeable sort and a talented one at that. Not content with just releasing a slew of great records with her ex-band Catatonia she also hosts one of the best shows on radio. Her Sunday morning slot on 6music is expertly executed, an ad-hoc collection of little known tunes that are perfectly contextualised by Matthews soft lilt. It is the best just out of bed, but still feeling sleepy soundtrack there is. Not too much of a stretch then for the Welsh girl to record a Christmas album. ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ adopts a traditional approach as old favourites are given a brand new look. The end result is an album for the family, generally stripped of modern nuances with simplicity being the overriding feeling. While I really like it I am sure my 10 year old self would have been utterly entranced. Only the big production on the lead track with Tom Jones disturbs what is otherwise a quiet and thoughtful affair. Here’s hoping it brings as more joy to as many people as possible. KD
