It was never going to trouble the Billboard charts in the same fashion as Tone LÅc’s 1989 original but then the Frank & Walters weren’t altogether serious about eclipsing it anyway. Despite becoming a firm live favourite ‘Funky Cold Medina’ was spirited away as a b-side on the bands ‘After All’ single. With that release long since out of commission it wasn’t until the ‘Souvenirs’ compilation arrived in 2005 that ‘Funky Cold Medina’ was given a permanent home. The track was an ideal choice for the Cork band’s frolicsome nature, a characteristic that probably robbed them of the steely determination needed to make good on their genuine talent. The good news of course is that 2/3’s of the original cast are still delighting live audiences, with their latest japery involving a run through debut album ‘Trains, Boats and Planes’. KD
