Despite being one of the most derided genres shoegaze continues to influence a whole host of contemporary bands. In Echo Lake it has managed to apply its floppy haired clip on one of this years blog sensations (they’re signed to blog label No Pain In Pop). And while such a turn of events is likely to cause as much groaning as it does salivation nothing is likely to halt the meteoric rise of this young London quintet. Given that we’ve lived shoegaze first time around we tend to be picky in our choice of grave diggers but Echo Lake build their tunes so expertly they easily stand apart from their influences. ‘Sunday Evening’ is gorgeously removed, half produced, fully baked, all twinkling chords, female cooing and at 5 minutes plus never appears in the least bit stretched. A genuine thrill for both old and young .KD
