Hardly makes sense that a most charming pairing like Raissa Khan-Panni and Mark Horwood have surfaced so rarely in critical tomes. For the Mummers are deserving of more than a half-lit underground berth, their music is the stuff of universal appeal. Not that that means it is in any way diluted to attract the masses. Take a listen to their latest EP ‘Milk Hollow Road’ and hear intelligent pop music with huge orchestral flourishes combined with Khan-Panni’s rich vocals. And one only has to see what the duo did with the Black Keys otherwise tuneless ‘Everlasting Light’ to recognise the alchemy that is possible when they are at the wheel. ‘Call Me A Rainbow’ opens the newbie with all the power and illumination of a Bjork epic. It is so pretty it is surely only several grains of sand before the Mummers are on everyone’s lips and lots of influential pages. KD
