‘Spirit or Something’ is quite the sorbet for tired indie rock ears. Its makers Monogold don’t constrict themselves with tired old cliches, instead they reach for new strands of invention. The result is a festival anthem in waiting, a tropical frolic which could have been beamed down from outer space in a glorious attempt by the natives to attract like minds from our planet. Could have been I say because Monogold are actually based in Brooklyn, a vast galaxy of aliens intent of viewing the world through the prism of creation. Doesn’t make sense but such is the rising mercury on my internal happiness index following half a dozen waltzes with ‘Spirit or Something’ you’ll have to forgive me. There are similarly bedecked sonic oysters to be swallowed whole on Monogold’s new album ‘The Softest Glow’ via their bandcamp. Feel them in the pit of your stomach. KD
