We may well be on the cusp of the kickstarter generation wherein bands denounce the traditional route of letting record labels do the donkey work (after which said donkey’s carry the loot back to label HQ) and instead rely on contributions from fans to record and promo their album. It is a solid idea and one that is becoming more and more visible as the decade progresses. Surprised I was to see that Leicester group Cornershop have chosen this method (remember it was not all that long ago that they owned the charts thanks to a disposable dance remix of one of the their best songs ‘Brimful of Asha’) but it appears to have been a successful campaign as their new album ‘Cornershop & The Double ‘O’ Groove’ is more or less funded and is expected to be released next month. The album will be a collaboration between the Cornershop lads, Tjinder Singh and Ben Ayres, and Bubbley Kaur. ‘The United Provinces of India’ is the ravishing first taste which sees the band do as they always have in offering the alternative with plenty of eastern promises.
