Of all the bands I’ve come across over the last few years perhaps the most impenetrable has been the unpronounceable (you’d think) Xiu Xiu. Despite the scrape and tear and general industrial sequences I am unable to totally distance myself and as time goes by songs like ‘Muppet Face’ do become quite adhesive. And that’s before you even go near the task of unscrambling the themes present in Jamie Stewart’s lyrics. But anyone who labels one of their tunes ‘Bog People’ and commercially releases it has my seal of approval. Makes you wonder why Bord Na Móna haven’t been in touch doesn’t it? ‘Muppet Face’ is taken from 2005’s ‘La Forêt’ and despite some eardrum perforating moments it tends to focus on being a pop song for the most part. You may love it, you may loathe it but you certainly won’t forget it. KD

Took me a while to get into the album, but I did eventually. >>Did you know Jamie Stewart’s dad worked at Digidesign and he nabbed him some Protools prototypes?>More here: http://musicalrooms.wordpress.com/2008/05/15/musical-rooms-part-26-xiu-xiu/
And I thought I was a nerd!
this is a great song.
MP3 hugger, my other half runs his own studio and records bands (which is partly how I came up with the idea for Musical Rooms). In putting the MR pieces together I realised it’s hard to beat musicians for nerdiness. :)
Yep, I heard a music nerd won the 60- metre-make-a-radio-from-junk dash at the nerd Olympics in Ballyhaunis alright.
this album is fantastic. im really into this new band that jamie stewart just produced/recorded too called railcars, myspace.com/railcarsmusic i think. saw them open for handsome furs in my shit town back in april.
Thanks for the tip J, gonna check out Railcars straight away.
