Although it may not have been strictly written for Christmas and certainly wasn’t written by Matt Pond (Lindsey Buckingham in fact) this song will forever be welcomed at my snow-covered wreathed doorway. It is taken from Matt Pond’s 2005 release the ‘Winter Songs’ EP, a collection of tunes recorded in the blazing heat of the previous summer. This and the lushly dispatched ‘Snow Day’ are the EP’s highlights. Like all the best Christmas tunes ‘Holiday Road’ boasts a soft focus even if Pond’s vocals initially mirror a grizzled Peter Gabriel. Before you know it though your fatigued ears are being treated to an engagingly warm carol service that’ll soon spread to the rest of your body until you resemble an inviting windowsill glow light.
