What a strange trip it has been for Nada Surf. Feted by all and sundry back in 1996 for the cheerleader chic that was their debut single ‘Popular’ they have made a habit of bouncing back with new material against the odds. Now onto their 5th album ‘Lucky’ it seems the New York trio just refuse to throw in the towel. Lucky us, because Matthew Caws is a talented writer who cold shoulders anything resembling self-serving payola (which ultimately led to the band losing their record contract). He writes from the heart, which gives his compositions added expression (check out ‘Hyperspace’ for a rollercoaster ride full of heart stopping moments). ‘See These Bones’ includes vocals from Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard and is the first taster from the new album, which won’t get an official release until early next year. The passion builds incrementally with the multi-layered vocals adding dimension until the devastating conclusion begs the listener to live life to the full. Music with a message, how refreshing. KD
