Akron/Family – Ed Is A Portal

As crazy as it may seem it is quite possible that the Go! Team’s latest missive (‘Proof of Youth’) could make them household names. If this oddity were to become reality then bands as lavishly quirky as Akron/Family could surely bask in the slipstream. For those of us skirting on the edges of the music industry cocking a keen ear to anything that sounds remotely brand new and interesting then ‘Ed Is A Portal’ is like manna from heaven. Devilishly assembled by what sounds like an army of musicians (there are only 4 of them) this is a song to brighten up the dreariest of winter nights. Skirting through a mix bag of genres each and every one of its detours blooms into a rollicking good time rather that the expected creative cul-de-sac. Exhilarating, yet never in a way that could become tiresome. KD

one of the labels emusic applied to <>Ed is a Portal<> was <>frenetic country jamboree<>, but I don’t think it was frenzied or chaotic anywhere. The song is like a person who can handle multiple personalities without freaking out like Sybil. <>Ed<> would seem at home in an outdoor concert arena with minarets in the background. The family seems to have a thing for world music, and nothing to do with Ohio. I wonder what sort of influences they have been infected by. emusic also tagged the ending <>trip-hop chant<>. It was just a quirky reprise, but did AF change the sound to transition into the next track? got no idea. also considered “Ed” as the acronym for education, where a good education allows you to pass through a time tunnel into a world of nerdy tribes. But couldn’t find the lyrics. Until then, my brain is swimming in the waves <>Ed<> created in my cerebrospinal fluid. Party with <>Ed<>.
