Richard Warren’s (Echoboy) ‘Giraffe’ came like a bolt from the blue. Sure he’d been part of the Hybrids but it was such a delight to find an unfamiliar artist fully formed and so perfectly primed to thrill. And that’s what 2002’s ‘Giraffe’ was, a windswept electronic masterpiece that recalled dubnobasswithmyheadman era Underworld and elements of Space’s dancier efforts. At the time Warren had been in talks with Noel Gallagher to join Oasis but the Nottingham based artist wisely decided against it. Instead he set his sights on a more inventive brand of guitars and synths and with producer Flood he arrived at a very successful formula. Opener ‘Automatic Eyes’ is perhaps the strongest track as evidenced by it fluid momentum and Warren’s zombie affected vocals that somehow managed to be warm and affecting. KD
