If Tom Cruise were to play himself in a movie about his life would he really need to act? Not sure I really care to be honest but I wonder how Sandro Perri felt when he decided to put a new spin on some of his own back catalogue when he was performing as Polmo Polpo. To make it interesting he ditched the electronics in favour of the acoustic guitar so the otherworldly compilation of artificial sounds suddenly became songs in their own right. To see where he came from you’ve gotta listen to the elegant sprawl that is ‘Requiem For A Fox’ recorded as Polmo Polpo. The gathering storm is quite unique and never outlasts its extended running time. Then there is last years ‘Sandro Perri Plays Polmo Polpo’ which included ‘Dreaming’; a delicate reworking of a track from 2003’s ‘Like Hearts Swelling’. Shorn of technical wizardry, the artist gets straight to the heart of the matter pouring emotion in a gently swaying heartbreaker. Typical innovation and another ear opening wonder from the stable that has brought us Do Make Say Think and Godspeed You Black Emperor. KD
