This is the first in a weekend full of post-rock wonders. To give it it’s correct definition (from the music journalist who coined the term Simon Reynolds) post-rock is ‘using rock instrumentation for non-rock purposes, using guitars as facilitators of timbre and textures rather than riffs and power chords’. It must also be added that in general vocals are absent in this genre.
God Is An Astronaut are from Wicklow and will release their new album ‘Far From Refuge’ later this month. Praised for their intense live shows God Is An Astronaut raised the bar with the 3 opening tracks on their last album ‘All Is Violent, All Is Bright’. It was a remarkable statement of intent as evidenced by opener ‘Fragile’. You’ll hear elements of Sigur Ros in its textures and there is an emotional swirl present throughout. ‘Fragile’ follows the well-treaded technique of swinging between gentle atmospherics and torrential waves of noise but the effect is never less than heartbreaking. If that doesn’t get you then the video surely will. KD
